Your privacy is critically important to us. At Focused Scribe, we have a fundamental principle: We are thoughtful about the personal information we ask you to provide and the personal information that we collect about you through the operation of our services.

WHO WE ARE

Focused Scribe is an open-source, local-first writing application designed to allow anyone to write without distraction. We believe in powering the open internet with code that is open source.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

We only collect information about you if we have a reason to do so — for example, to provide our Services or to communicate with you.

• Local Storage: The vast majority of your data (manuscripts, settings, themes) consists of local data stored entirely within your web browser's LocalStorage and IndexedDB. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it.
• Sync Data: If you use the optional Cloud Sync features (e.g. Login), we collect the minimum necessary data to synchronize your work across devices (encrypted story blobs).
• Usage Information: We do NOT collect analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party advertising data.

HOW WE USE INFORMATION

We use your local browser storage to save your work and provide the service. We do not use your content for AI training or marketing.

SHARING INFORMATION

We do not sell your private personal information. We do not share your data with advertisers.

By using Focused Scribe, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please do not use the Service.

1. SERVICES & ACCOUNTS

**Authentication:** Accounts are secured and managed via **Clerk**. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.

**Usage:** You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service.

2. CONTENT & CONDUCT

**Ownership:** You retain full ownership of the content you create. You represent that you have the rights to your content.

**Prohibited:** You may not use the Service for unlawful purposes, malware distribution, or to infringe on others' rights.

3. PAYMENTS

**Processing:** Payments (if applicable) are processed securely via **Stripe**. We do not store your credit card information directly.

**Fees:** Fees for paid features are non-refundable unless required by law. Subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled.

4. DISCLAIMERS & LIABILITY

**"As Is":** Focused Scribe is provided "as is" without warranty. We disclaim all warranties of merchantability.

**Limitation:** Our liability is limited to the greater of $50 or the fees paid by you in the last 12 months.

5. THIRD PARTY SERVICES

Our Service relies on third-party providers including **Clerk** (Authentication) and **Stripe** (Payments). Your use of those services is also subject to their respective Terms of Service.

Tracks your total word count for the current session. Updates in real-time as you type.

Set a daily or session target word count. The counter will visually indicate progress towards your goal.

Sprint: Set a timer (top bar) and write continuously. We track your "Best WPM" (Words Per Minute) record locally.

Goals: Set a session word count target. The counter turns green and notifies you when reached.

New Story: Click "NEW" in the Manuscript tab. Enter a title.

Switching: Use the dropdown menu to switch between multiple active drafts.

Renaming: Click "RENAME" to change the current story's title.

Deleting: Click "DEL" to permanently remove a story (requires confirmation).

Note: The default "autosave" story cannot be renamed or deleted.

Setup: In "Manuscript > Git Configuration", enter your GitHub/GitLab details:

• Provider: github or gitlab
• Owner/Repo: e.g., "username/my-novel"
• Branch: main or master
• Token: A Personal Access Token with "repo" scope.

Pushing: Click "PUSH TO GIT" to back up your text. This creates a new commit in your repository.

Customization: Adjust colors, fonts, and CRT effects in the Environment tab.

Saving: Click the (+) button next to the preset dropdown to save your current look as a new Custom Theme.

Deleting: Select a custom theme and click the (-) button to remove it. Default themes cannot be deleted.

Download: Use ".MD" (Markdown) or ".DOC" (Word) buttons to save files locally.

Publish: Click "PUBLISH TO WEB" to create a public, read-only link valid for 1 year. Great for beta readers.

Highlights style issues like passive voice, adverbs, and weak verbs. Configure active checks in settings.

Readability statistics including Flesch-Kincaid ease, sentence count, and dialogue percentage.

Visual graph of sentence lengths. Use it to ensure variety in your prose flow.

Customize the app aesthetics, fonts, and colors.

Translate the UI. Note: Linter support for non-English languages is still work-in-progress.

Adjust CRT effects, colors, fonts, and layout options like Mobile Zoom and Steamdeck Mode.

Select mechanical keyboard sounds, ambient hums, and interference noises.

Copy/Paste your configuration string to share your theme or back it up.
